Anthony Barone:  From Another World

By Joshua Puit

I’m honestly not sure how I stumbled upon Anthony Barone’s YouTube channel, but the first thing I said when I heard him play was, “HOLY S***!”.  Barone is a metal drummer, a type of metal genre that I typically don’t listen to, but his playing kept me watching and viewing more of his videos.  His drumming skills are beyond incredible, and watching him play made me think two things.  One - I need to practice my drums more.  Two - Forget number one, I should just sell my kit.

The first video I came across was Slaying The Prophets Ov Isa by Behemoth.  I only needed to watch the first 30 seconds of the video to know that this man was insanely talented; and he must be from another world!  His blast beats and double kick were very solid and tight, incredibly fast, never missing a beat; a difficult task at times when you’re playing at higher rates of speed.  Throughout the song, Barone makes transitions look easy, and he switches his snare hand from left to right multiple times (still maintaining power and accuracy) which really impressed me.  There was only one negative thing I found in this video, and it wasn’t even in his performance.  It was how his tom drums were EQed in the mix (slightly high) and their sound, when introduced, came through the mix slightly odd (probably from during the editing/mixing stage).  Regardless of the audio mix (which really wouldn’t be noticed by a lot of people), you’ll be able to see an amazing drummer perform flawlessly.

The next video I watched was his most recent cover, The Ills of Modern Man by Despised Icon.  I really loved the video work done in this cover; the multiple angles, crisp image, and slow motion effects, added with his performance makes this a very enjoyable video to watch.  Again, you’ll see his insane speed on his kick and snare, but you’ll also be able to see his technique a little better (especially when it comes to his feet).  I noticed that he does a lot with his feet; standard hits, the use of the heel-toe technique, and the swivel technique.  With a lot of speed and a lot of technique, you can see that Barone has great control and accuracy with his kick.  I’ve seen a lot of drummers who can play fast, not quite as fast as Barone, but they don’t show the control and accuracy as much as he does.

I also noticed that Barone does use triggers.  Some people say it’s a way to “cheat” when playing the drums, but I don’t believe Barone really relies on them too heavily.  Just watching any of his videos, you can see the speed and hits are more his than the help of the triggers.  I think his use of triggers are just to enhance the audio quality, and they’re not used to really make up for anything because he’s definitely a very solid drummer and looks to be a heavy hitter.  I’ve seen a couple of his videos where he is playing without triggers, and he is just as fast, and just as impressive.  Even so in his first video upload where he plays As Blood Runs Black by Hester Prynne.  I believe he is 15 years old in the video, and surprisingly he was incredibly fast then.  After watching a majority of his videos, I could tell he’s put a lot of work into his playing and he’s gotten better and better over the years.  All in all though, he seems to have been a tremendously good drummer since he picked up his first pair of sticks.

One thing I hate seeing with drummers is having massive kits, and only using a couple drums and cymbals within songs.  Barone’s kit is a five-piece (six-piece in older videos), and he has an arsenal of cymbals (he has 10 cymbals I believe).  But what I like about him, is he actually uses everything.  He doesn’t have more than he needs, and although he does have a bigger kit than some drummers, he uses everything to its full potential and uses all the elements of his kit for great dynamics and effect.

Along with being an amazing drummer, Barone also plays guitar, making him a multi-talented musician.  I’ve only watched a few videos with him playing guitar, but he was a phenomenal player to me, being able to play both the rhythm and lead parts in songs.  Barone is also the drummer in a band called Aegaeon (pronounced ih-jee-uhn).  The band has over 75,000 likes on their facebook page, and you can check out some of their videos on YouTube.  This multi-talented musician, in my opinion, will go very far in the world of music.  Without a doubt with playing drums, or even guitar, he has incredible talent with both instruments, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of his videos.
