Emily Jane: Can I See Your I.D.?

By Joshua Puit

Searching through YouTube I came across a young girl named Emily Jane. I thought it was a huge coincidence because that's my girlfriends first name and middle name too. But what I had found wasn't a young girl, but a young women. Her age has been mistaken, not only by myself, but by many other viewers apparently. Emily herself even says at the beginning of her original song Seventeen, "I turned eighteen, I'm not twelve. Even though quite a lot of you think I'm twelve, I'm not". Although I was wrong about her age, there's no question that this young women is full of talent.

The first video I viewed was All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey. I thought the song choice was very bold and I wanted to see how it had turned out. I was initially skeptical because I love Mariah Carey's voice. And I also believe it would be a difficult challenge for anyone to sing a Mariah Carey song. But for the second time, I was mistaken, and I was blown away by the performance. Emily had such a wonderful voice, and she sings the song with a lot of confidence. By her side was a very talented man named Teeroy, who played the ukulele and also sang with Emily. Their voices together sounded great, and within one video, I was delighted to see two very talented people.

From those two videos impressing me, I decided to take a look at the very first video she posted. It was a cover song called Bones by Lewis Watson. I was unfamiliar with the song and artist, and with Emily's recommendation I checked him out before listening to her take on the song. Watson is another talented musician who I would also recommend taking a looking at. I thought Emily's version of Bones was really good. There were only a few minor mistakes made while she was playing the guitar, but not that many, and not really even that noticeable unless you were looking for mistakes. Her voice sounded really nice; gentle and soothing, but surprisingly powerful. I also liked, and thought it was funny, when she was distracted by something outside of her room, but she continued playing and singing without error. All in all, I thought she did a great job on the song.

Emily also does original songs, which I love to see from musicians. I like cover songs, but I honestly like hearing originals more. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, and the main song that stood out the most to me (as well as being my favorite of her videos) is her original song, Seventeen. She plays guitar in the song and does finger picking in certain parts which impressed me. I could tell her guitar skills had improved a lot based on this video (don't get me wrong, she still played well in the other videos). The transitions from finger picking to strumming were very clean. Her voice, which was already incredible to me, also sounded improved. She seemed to have better projection and it also sounded like her range and control improved as well. Of all of her videos, this was definitely my favorite and I hope that you'll check it out.

My second favorite song was a cover titled Shake It Off by Taylor Swift. The video co-features Teeroy once again, with him playing guitar this time and singing along with Emily. Their voices together in this song is truly amazing. The two of them together have such good chemistry and I loved their version of this song. Together, they definitely made this song their own, and it's another video you should take a look at. It's very impressive and unique, and I could honestly listen to this version all day long.

As far as Emily goes, I could really see her going far. I'm sure along the way, a lot of people will be asking for her I.D. though! Which really isn't a bad thing. It's better to look really young than to look really old in my opinion. Either way though, I do believe she has the potential to go very far in the world of music. In her video descriptions, at the end, I love the phrase she writes: "Keep on dreaming, dreamers". For the young talented women that she is, she seems to leave many viewers inspired. She gives a sense of hope and happiness to those who have had the pleasure of watching her videos. She is truly gifted and I'm glad that I stumbled upon her channel. Make sure to check out her videos, like them, and subscribe to her channel; you won't regret it.
